What on Earth is an Earthship? Well essentially it’s an off-grid building (meaning it has self-sustaining sources of power and water) that is made from recycled and natural materials. But the name really intrigued us, so Emily and the team went down to Stanmore near Brighton where the central base community Earthship stands, to participate in a self-building course to learn all the skills and knowledge necessary to construct one. Once there, she met Mischa, the director the the Low Carbon Trust, the organisation that advocates and facilitates the building of Earthships. He gave us a fascinating tour of this building which is built into the side of a hill to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. Emily then got her hands well and truly dirty making a glass bottle and tyre walls with Jon, their natural building artist, which creates incredibly beautiful and sustainable results.
