Marwen DerouicheDescriptionThe Green Britain TV Team are in Huddersfield, a once thriving textile town, however, the industry has declined with the increase of international fast fashion. However, one - of a few companies - is still committed to local production - McNair Shirts. We met with Natalie Stapleton who told us that although their merino wool is slow-freighted from Australia, all of the craftsmanship is done within a 10-mile radius. The shirts are super durable, being designed for outdoor use, and apparently don't need to be washed even after a long hike! Of course, like everything there are some drawbacks, the price being one, as something of such quality cannot compete with the fast fashion prices we are used to but hopefully, as more sustainable garments become more commonplace this will become less of a barrier.

Marwen DerouicheDescriptionWhat on Earth is an Earthship? Well essentially it’s an off-grid building (meaning it has self-sustaining sources of power and water) that is made from recycled and natural materials. But the name really intrigued us, so Emily and the team went down to Stanmore near Brighton where the central base community Earthship stands, to participate in a self-building course to learn all the skills and knowledge necessary to construct one. Once there, she met Mischa, the director the the Low Carbon Trust, the organisation that advocates and facilitates the building of Earthships. He gave us a fascinating tour of this building which is built into the side of a hill to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. Emily then got her hands well and truly dirty making a glass bottle and tyre walls with Jon, their natural building artist, which creates incredibly beautiful and sustainable results.

Marwen DerouicheDescriptionJoin Emily for a night in a tent, as she explores what's on offer at Wrinklers Wood Glamping, a site hidden deep into the Cornish countryside with safari-style tents, treetop houses and cabins tucked among the trees. The owners, James and Alex, spent 12 years running an eco-lodge in Tanzania and have tried to create a little piece of that back here in the UK. You can feel the influence of Tanzania all around. The site feels eco-friendly with most of the furnishing being sourced locally and responsibly sourced fires heating the accommodation and the chlorine-free wooden hot tubs. The family has still yet to go off-grid completely to run the operations but has plans to do this in the next few years. They have also built in a wellness aspect to the experience offering a huge list of treatments including infra-red and sound meditations. With wellbeing being such a critical aspect of not only sustainability but our lives in general, it's great to see such a range of holistic treatments to treat the guests' physical and mental health. We know that wellness retreats aren't always accessible for everybody, it is a bit of a luxury, and as a society we do need to create more well-being in our day-to-day lives. "Retreating" for a weekend break is not solely the answer. But what James and Alex have created here is a haven for prioritising yourself and your mental health and an opportunity to connect with nature that many of us do not have access to in our day-to-day lives. Thanks James and Alex!

DescriptionFirst stop, London... Green Britain go behind the scenes at one of Buller & Rice hair salons to investigate what makes these boutique salons stand out form the crowd in terms of sustainability. Emily meets with co-owners Anita and Steven and discover their mission to make the hairdressing experience as planet friendly as possible. From the use of eco-friendly products and refills to enironmentally friendly materials in the design, Buller & Rice has sustainability running through its veins. Even your split ends are getting a second life, as they are sent off to be turned into hair mats that are cleaning the oil spills in our oceans. Next, Emily travels to Wales to meet with Adele Williams in her Green Waves Hair Workshop who is transforming the hair ends into the oil spill mats. Inspired by her time in Canada where this was quite common practice she realised these mats were not being made widely here in Great Britain so she launched her workshop where it takes approximately 2 hours to make the mats using 500g of hair ends to create a two-foot square, one-inch thick mat, which can collect up to 1.5 gallons of oil.

DescriptionEmily travels to Scotland to meet with Glaswegian Siobhan McKenna to learn more about her ethical brand Rejean which provides an alternative to fast fashion with its stylish, long lasting denim clothing. Exasperated by the vast amounts of perfectly good denim material that goes to waste Siobhan decided to create a slow fashion brand that uses repurposed “waste” denim to make long lasting clothing. Emily visits Siobhan in her studio and discovers how the Scottish native hopes to turn the tide and inspire others to reflect on their fashion purchases.
